A completely engrossing book. I was hooked from the first page and didn't put it down until I had finished it. An excellent read. I recommend it highly.

Tournoff's compelling sense of pace fuses a deeply intriguing plot with a unique humanitarian delicacy. A futuristic context is thus blended masterfully with fundamental human dilemmas about love and loyalty. The introspective analyses of each character's inner drive deems every action astonishingly plausible. Indeed, deception and loyalty, family bonds and individual plights collide logically yet uncontrollably, culminating in a dilemma-ridden and enveloping climax. Through the Hanson family's spiralling 'Nightmare', we become enticingly aware of how fragile any situation can be, and how quickly it can descend into chaos. Thus, the central characters and the reader themselves are simultaneously caught unawares and propelled into an intricate web of emotion and action, of humanity and exploit.

A Nightmare in Paradise was not my usual read, however, having completed it within five days, I can honestly say that my taste in novels has now been broadened. I became totally engrossed in the plot and the characters, in fact, I felt as though I myself had moved to Sussex and stepped forward in time to the year 2009! The characters came alive, and each contributed to the story in a unique and compelling way. I particularly enjoyed the way the novel presented a varied storyline, including: mystery, suspense, romance, spirituality and sensitivity. This was a well written novel, with lovely attention to detail, continuity, and the complexity of human relationships. I am looking forward to reading future works by Mark Tournoff.

Mark Tournoff's first full length story is set just far enough into the future to be possible, but the surroundings are sufficiently familiar not to distract from the plot, which keeps up a good pace throughout. There are plenty of twists and turns before the end and the characters of Hanson, Sophie and William provide an interesting counterpoint to each other.

This book is full of suspense and intrigue, as well as being utterly gripping. Well written and with believable three-dimensional characters, the plot keeps you interested and wondering right up to the end. Also, because it is set in and around Horsham it seems more real, as you can imagine where everything is happening.

A "Nightmare in Paradise" is a book that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page.

Can eternal life be gained spiritually or temporarily? Will the past be easier to forget the longer that you love? There is a fine line drawn between what can be earned and that which is endowed.

Tournoff explores these issues with skill and insight. He high lights the arguments surrounding the advances of science against the morality of availability of these advances.

This book runs the gamut of emotions of loyalty, conviction and relationships and presents the reader with a twisting storyline that leads to a dramatic conclusion.

Tournoff’s book is a must for the discerning reader’s collection.

The following are customer reviews of "Crucial - A Champion’s Tale"

What a fantastic read! I couldn't put the book down. It is truly amazing the amount of time and effort Mark put into preparing for the "Countdown" programmes".

'Crucial makes excellent reading. I have much enjoyed it, and was impressed by the author's ability to describe it all without a hint of malice.'

Review  by: Wil, London

"Crucial" was a fun read and a must-have for any “Countdown” fan, Scrabble fan, or anybody who loves these word puzzles. The book is genuinely captivating and adds an emotional touch and personal feelings that viewers cannot sense from the television screen. It takes a reader through the triumph and defeat of a great "Countdowner" not only professionally on the programme, but in the author's personal life, something only "Countdown" contestants can truly feel. This book teaches readers to strive for their highest dream, like the author in his "Countdown" ambition and his career aspirations.

Thank you for this book and good luck in your writing career!

'I was unbelievably impressed. It is all the small details, such as how contestants share the make-up room with Carol and Susie, that make everything so much more interesting.'
